5 people (Michael G, Gina, Alan, Mel and new member Allan) met at the car-park at 8 (ish- Mel was late…) and piled into Alan and Gina’s car.
Our walk started from a midgey car-park at Achnashellach station, through the trees, until the path opened up beneath Fuar Tholl. We were treated to an amazing rainbow when approaching Coire Lair. A well made stalkers path took us up the start of the ascent of Sgorr Ruadh, leaving the path to move up rocky and grassy slopes above the crags to the summit cairn. The shifting weather gave an interesting atmosphere to the views!
A little ridge descended from the summit and into the bealach between the 2 mountains where we began our ascent of our 2nd munro. Over a small knoll before tacking the steep rocky step (actually there is a pretty good path now- not mentioned in the books…..) where we came across 2 brave ptarmigans. A small cairn marks the spot through the rock step to remember on the way back. An easy ascent to the summit gave views across to liathach with clouds brushing the tops of the mountains beyond. As the weather was threatening, a quick descent back the way we came rather than along the full ridge of beinn liath mhor, was taken and back along the glen through coire lair. After a heavy shower the weather cleared again as we walked back to the car.
A dinner stop at the Ledgowan Lodge Hotel in Achnasheen topped off a great day (where they put us in a seperate dining room- too smelly?)
We had a great day walk and are looking forward to the next weekend meet in Glencoe. 17-18th october. Quite a few people have already signed up but a few places left so please send me an email of you want to come.
