An Teallach and Beinn Ghobhlach

An Teallach

An enjoyable day out was had by all as An Teallach was ascended from all angles by club members.

Ten set off from Corrie Hallie splitting into two groups of four and six to ascend Sail Laith and on to the ridge leading to the summit Sgurr Fiona. The only real rain came on just at the start of the first technical bit of scrambling, necessitating some rope work. The weather dried up shortly after, we caught up with the group who had taken the bypass, at the second munro.

Descent was by Glas Tholl those in the lead managed to cross the stream by ascending a large boulder that straddled it, the remainder fought there way through the rhododendron jungle back to the road.

Prospective member, Jan and Arthur started from the lay-by next to the Dunndonnell MRT base and followed the path over Meall Garbh and Sròn a’ Choire then steeply up to Bidein a’ Ghlas Thuill.  There were excellent views out to the Summer Isles from the initial part of the walk.  The An Teallach ridge remained hidden until we reached the summit of Biden a’ Ghlas Thuill and then super views of the ridge were revealed. We ascended Sgurr Fiona  by its North West ridge.

We tried to spot the group tackling the ridge, but saw only sheep and goats. We did have an interesting encounter en route to the first munro meeting two young ladies, one of whom had a red legged partridge sitting happily on top of her rucksack.  This was a pet of some years which seemed to enjoy the luxury of being carried up the hill.

We retraced our steps to Coir’ a Mhuilinn and then descended by the burn. The ascent path is preferable.

Taking part: (Ridge) Stuart, Hazel, Andrew, Matt, Martyn, Brian and Tim; (by-pass path) Mhairi, Becky, Margaret and prospective member Fiona: (Munros) Arthur and prospective member Jan.

Beinn Ghobhlach

May and Richard rendezvous in Maryburgh to drive to Dundonnel arriving bang on time for a 9.45am start. The weather forecasters were inaccurate to our benefit as we had a day of high cloud and warm sunshine. The breeze got up as we ascended the mountain which was welcome to keep cool and to keep the midges at bay. Beinn Ghobhlach is only 635m in height but lying on the Scoraig peninsula between the two Loch Brooms it allows fantastic views to the Dundonnel mountains (including An Teallach) to the south and the Summer Isles.

We walked 3k westward along the footpath between Badrallach to Scoraig and  ascended north-east up a gully containing a distinct but unnamed burn. This led us onto a bit of a plateau and then into the Coire Dearg. we stopped frequently to enjoy the views down Little Loch Broom to the west. We reached the twin peaks and had a lunch break on the main summit about 1.30pm.

The descent to the south was steep and sore on the knees but we soon reached the level ground between the two lochs, Loch na h-Uidhe and Loch na Coireig. We took our time to descend to the footpath given the lovely weather and there being no need to rush home. We got back to the car about 4.30pm. A thoroughly enjoyable day.
