Creag Ruadh and Dun-da-lamh Fort; Cairngorm and the Northern Corries
Creag Ruadh & Dun da Lamh Fort
Twas the first day of December
And the skies were still pitch black
When the walkers woke to don their gear
And fill their trusty pack.
We met up at the Everlast,
The gym that is not there.
The weather not too drastic,
In fact it seemed quite fair.
So ten humans and three canines
Split up into three
But which car park should we aim for?
We would finally agree.
We drove down and passed through Laggan
As the daylight split the sky.
Clouds looming just above us
Assured no chance of staying dry.
We headed up the forest track
Chatting on the way
Then we listened to a story
About the Picts from yester – day.
We stopped to pose for photos
At the old forgetten fort
Then down the path to the cut off
Where three of us did abort.
But Mel cried “On -we’re going up”
As she led us through the bog
So we followed like obedient kids
Preparing for the slog.
The summit trig was chilly
So we didn’t hang about.
We were just a stones throw from the path
When there came an anxious shout.
“Oh no”cried Tim “my trusty pole”
I’ve left it far behind,
So he and Maz retraced their steps
In a frustrating game of… REWIND.
The group met up back on the track
And they trudged down in the dry
With thoughts of warmth and and tasty food
And chats of hills gone by.

Cairngorm and the Northern Corries
We gathered at the deserted Cairngorm ski centre car park at 9am and sat for a few minutes, as the wind buffeted the cars and clouds scudded across the sky. With some trepidation, we donned our jackets, laced up boots and huddled by the loos to discuss plans.
We split into 2 groups of 5 plus Ola the dog, and headed off up the path, following the ridge to the west of Cairn Lochan. The heavy snow from the week before had almost entirely disappeared leaving a few patches. The wind eased off at times, and we thought we might manage Ben Macdui, but as we ascended it became clear that the cloud would shroud the plateau and the wind was by now gusting to the forecast 50mph or so. We decided to leave the Big Grey Man of Ben Macdui in peace and the groups huddled together in a hollow for a bite to eat.
We quickly moved on, across the rim of Stob Coire An Sneachda, with some good views north and west, and detoured up to Cairngorm for a quick summit photo. We took the tourist path down to the ski centre and having blown away the cobwebs, enjoyed a coffee and chat in the café. A blustery, mostly dry and very enjoyable day.
