Fisherfield camp 30 Aug - 1 Sept 2024

The group met on Saturday evening at Incheril. The party consisted of Melanie, Emma, Martin, Kirsten and Jade. We walked around 9km along the glen with the sun setting as we reached Loch Fada and set up camp for the night.  It was a spectacular evening and sunset with clear skies perfect for star watching – but, of course, the price of this was midgies. We still managed a bit of star gazing, but mostly through midgie nets!

We left the campsite at 8am the next morning, heading north-west along the loch towards the munros, A’Mhaighdean and Ruadh Stac Mor. The ground was broken and boggy but the team kept up a fast pace and transversed the higher ground to avoid worst of it and the fisherfield midgies, reaching the base of A’Mhaighdean before 11am. A quick climb took us to the summit at 967m with spectacular views and a clear sky. After a chilly group photo we headed down the other side of A’Mhaighdean towards Ruadh Stac More. Reaching the base we left our bags behind and started scrambling up a gully up the rock face by a high col. Although the scramble was difficult it was great fun and made for a nice change of pace.

Reaching the 918m summit felt like a great achievement and more clear skies meant we had another amazing view to enjoy. After enjoying the view we traversed back down to our bags and managed to make it down in one piece. All that was left was the long hike back to camp and onwards back to the cars. Taking a different route over the boggy ground we had more amazing views and had great fun dodging all the rivers. Emma managed to find the energy to peel off and heading up Stac a chaorruinn. Despite a fast pace back to the loch, Emma managed to meet us back there as we were packing up tents and join us for the walk back. Thankfully the loch had much less midges at this point, which meant a more relaxed packing pace. With the sun still shining we headed along the glen to end our walk. Although the 9km walk felt especially long, and was full of blisters, we made it back to the car tired but accomplished and feeling proud of ourselves.

The whole weekend was amazing and was a lovely group to complete the long hikes with. All that was left was the recovery over the next few days, which was worth it!
