Lagangarbh Weekend Meet

The sun was shining and Glencoe was busy - every car park and possible parking space was full. The rough track down to Lagangarbh was lined with parked (abandoned?) cars and our way blocked by an unfortunate family of Dutch tourists who had broken a spring and grounded their old BMW. Several folk came to their help and rocking the back wheel onto a flat stone gave them enough clearance to get moving again. I drove down to the bottom of the track -avoiding boulders and deep puddles - very clear in my mind that this was not a good idea.

Lagangarbh Cottage has had a facelift, with new kitchen, shower and toilets, providing a super base for a very pleasant, sociable weekend and a great base for our weekend adventures, recounted below.

Unfortunately, the weather broke on Sunday and  only Dan braved the weather on Ben Vane.  The rest of us scattered to drier parts.

It was lovely to be out in the hills again and to have such a good base for the weekend.

With an excellent weather forecast on Saturday, Fiona N, Karolina and I headed down the Glen for a day climbing Meall Lighiche (Corbett) and Sgurr na h-Ulaidh (Munro). Both involved steep grassy ascents with wild flowers to distract us. It was a day for sunbathing on the summits admiring views to Ben Nevis and Mull. A lovely day out with lovely company.

Although I didn't get up any hills I was glad to have two enjoyable bike rides. On Friday I cycled down Glen Etive and inspected Inbhirfhaolain hut, a facility the club has used in the past. Saturday's trip was along the West Highland Way to Bridge of Orchy, and looked at the lovely Loch Tulla on my return.

On Friday Fiona and Mike went climbing on the Buachaille linking North Face Route, Hiccup and January Jigsaw followed by a visit to the summit and back to the hut. On the Saturday we were back on the Buachaille again this time linking June crack and May crack. Both very enjoyable routes.

On Sunday we visited the climbing wall followed by beer and pizza.

On Saturday self, Irene and Andrew met up with Steve (with Raineach) at Victoria Bridge. It was a foggy morning as we went up a good path toward the south side of Stob a Choire Odhair. We were soon above the clouds which then quickly evaporated leaving great clear views all round. At one point we were sure we could see the Cairngorms in the distance. It was a big descent to the bealach with Stob Ghabhar with a steep plod up some scree to gain the short ridge to the top. Steve parted with us to gain some tops with the rest of us descending past Creag an Steallaire waterfalls. The walk was finished by refreshments at Inveroran Hotel’s sunny beer garden.

Great hills and great company and brilliant to meet old friends and a new one. The extension to the two tops and one deleted one was delightful on grassy/mossy ground not unlike Ben Wyvis and was not what I was expecting.  The walk out was grim on what was basically a land rover track - quick, but murder in my boots.

I was on a mission to pick off a couple of errant Corbetts that I had missed on previous trips. So on Friday afternoon I headed further south to Tyndrum to climb Beinn Odhar. (I don’t know why I had not climbed it when I lived in the area some years ago.)

On Saturday, I went even further south to Butterbridge near the Rest and be Thankful to traverse Stob Coire Creagach from its west top, Binnien an Fhidhleir to Stoban Dubha and return via Glen Kinglas and Abyssinia bothy.  The ascent on both days was unremittingly steep - with sheep. The traverse of Binnien an Fhidhleir is a super walk across the tops.
